A Road Trip Through the Upper Paleolithic

By virtue of the amount time and effort invested in the study of Archaeology, Western Europe currently offers some of the spectacular sites associated with the development of man during the Upper Paleolithic.  This is the route of a road through some of those stunning highlights (Note: There is a ferry that runs between Santander and Plymouth.   

The Itinerary

  1. El Castillo, Puente Visego, Spain. Dating from around 40 kya, this site contains both figurative and symbolic art that might have been created by both Neanderthals and Sapiens.
  2. Atapureca, Spain . One of the world's oldest sites of human habitation outside of Africa with a history setching back nearly 1 million years.
  3. Perche, Merle, France. Dating from around 29 kya this cave is famous for its magnificent images of horses and mammoths.
  4. Lascaux, France. The site contains nearly 6,000 images of animals, human figures and symbolic signs.
  5. Les Eyzies, France. The site of multiple archaeological finds including Cro-Magnon man and home to France's National Prehistory museum.
